The treatment of a uterine septum is performed hysteroscopically. A special operative hysteroscope (resectoscope) is used, along with electric energy for cauterizing and incising the septum. Alternatively, hysteroscopic scissors may be used if the septum is not particularly thick or highly vascularized.
Preoperative evaluation requires an ultrasound scan and sometimes laparoscopy. Usually, after the procedure, a copper IUD is placed for a few weeks to prevent adhesions. Removing the septum improves fertility by restoring the uterine cavity to its normal anatomical shape.
